WELLINGTON IN INDIA AND THE INDIAN MUTINY
Weekend Study Course23rd – 25th March 2007 Higham Hall, Bassenthwaite, Cumbria. Arranged in conjunction with Higham Hall, the Lake District’s College of Continuing Education SPEAKERS - ALLAN MALLINSON, PATRICK MERCER, JOHN MOREWOOD, JULIAN SPILSBURY Wellington’s campaigns in India are often neglected so we are concentrating on this aspect of his military life in 2007. Julian Spilsbury, professional writer and military historian will be dealing with all aspects of Wellington’s campaign in India, and drawing conclusions about the influence that India had on his future military strategy. John Morewood will outline the contribution of the Royal Navy to the British war effort in India in the period 1793-1815. To celebrate the 150th anniversary we are devoting part of the course to the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Patrick Mercer MP, will describe the causes, the Mutiny itself and the consequences that the Mutiny had for future British military and political strategy in India.
Allan Mallinson, author of the Matthew Hervey novels will speak on writing historical fiction, illustrated by describing the research needed for the exploits in India of his popular character. Inclusive residential cost is £157. There is an additional supplement of £6.00 for en-suite facilities. Non-residential £100.00. Deposit £25.00 per person. Higham Hall is a Georgian mansion situated in a beautiful part of the Lake District with views to Bassenthwaite and Skiddaw. The standard of accommodation is high and the catering excellent. The Lake District is beautiful in early Spring and the daffodils will be at their best. The course is also open to members of the public so do not delay as numbers are restricted, and all previous Higham Hall courses have been fully subscribed.
